CAMBODIA TOWER
In the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, a 40-story tower is envisioned to become a new urban icon. Commissioned through a private competition by a Taiwanese investment group, the project proposes a hotel-apartment complex that blends efficiency, character, and local rootedness.
Each floor houses nine apartments, while the lower levels accommodate commercial use and provide access to the tower’s residences. This active base connects the building to the city’s daily life, while the upper floors offer sweeping views of the urban landscape.
Unlike many foreign investment developments that replicate generic models with little connection to their surroundings, Cambodia Tower seeks an architectural expression deeply tied to place. Two key conditions guide the design: Phnom Penh’s tropical climate, which calls for effective solar protection, and local regulations, which place no restrictions on the square footage allocated to balconies.
This opens the door for balconies to become protagonists- not mere functional add-ons, but structuring elements of a unique architectural language. Their design responds both to the need for shade and the desire to open the living spaces to the city, creating a residential experience that celebrates its environment.
The formal inspiration comes from Cambodia’s national flower,the 無憂花(Plumeria), a symbol of serene beauty and spiritual grounding. Its soft, open forms inspire a geometry that unfolds across the facade, giving the building a distinctive identity rooted in its cultural context.
Cambodia Tower does not simply aim to rise. It seeks to blossom within the city–an architecture that breathes with its climate, speaks to its culture, and offers a new way of living in vertical space.
